Three years ago I purchased a computer with 2 gigs of RAM (2GB DDR400 1GBX2) The computer has primarily been used over the past couple years for random schoolwork, internet surfing, etc away at college. However, the computer is now back home and tonight when I went to install a game on the computer (world of warcraft) I noticed that My Computer -> Properties -> General -> Computer now says:

AMD Sempron Processor 3000+
1.8GHz, 512 MB of RAM

I could understand if one of the ram sticks went bad, but is it possible for one and a half of the sticks to go bad? Or could something else be bogging down the computer? I ran the malware search and have AVG 8.5 active if that helps.

Yes, might happen, when the mounted RAM sticks are third-parted ones.

Would check if the sticks are still mounted properly or if they got a little bit unlocked left and right at the retaining clips. If thats ok, remove the sticks and change their mounting position like 1rst stick --> 2nd RAM bank, 2nd stick --> 1rst RAM bank. Check it please.

If problem gotn't solved I would suggest you're looking for 2 other DDR400 sticks (maybe a friend of you can help out with that ). Seize isn't interesting for that test, but you can check if the RAM-banks are still working. Change them and do another test and get back to us with the result please.
