Internet explorer browser doesn't seem to come up but when I check the task manager iexplorer.exe is there although it does not show up in the applicaitons tab only in the processes tab. This is the in-laws laptop and it had a bunch of problems I think I have most of them resolved but I can't get this one fixed....please help or else it is time to reload.

Can you tell me more about what happens when start Internet Explorer? Does it also happen with a different browser? What kind of problems did you have before?

Your log looks clean.

Before this they had a couple of viruses and spyware on the machine. I found a trojan adclicker, Virtumonde and Zlob and alot of spyware tracking junk on the machine. They only use IE so it is the only browser on the machine. After I posted this log I closed Internet Explorer and then could not get it to come back up, but all five instances were in the task manager under processes but none in the application tab. Maybe I should uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer or maybe upgrade to a newer version?? I don't think they would want to use a different browser as they are not real computer savy (that is how they got themselves into this mess) Let me know what else I can do to try and help you find a solution for me. As the log appears to be clean, I'd like to run a different scanner.

Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here.

A reinstall won't hurt as far as I know, but I do think that something might still be lurking in the deeps of the computer. The only problem is I need Internet Explorer to find out.

Good... In that case I think someone got a little too enthusiastic and did something they shouldn't have done.

This will get rid of the last remains of the infection you battled on your own.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Please post a new log from HijackThis after this.

I added that registry string and things still seem to be running fine. It is strange that the edit you sent me is exactly the file that symantec found as a virus but could not clean or quarrantine it. The file"__c001E04E" was found as a virus by symantec only it was a .dat file and was located in the windows/system32 folder. Hi duffer,

I think that Symantec got rid of the file itself, but somehow got interfered with when it started to clean the Registry.

The Hijackthis log looks clean, so I'll send you on your way. If something props up please come back :)

Thanks for all your help on this, all I know is that when they brought it to me to see if I could fix it they already knew of the _c001E04E.dat file problem as they had run Symantec scan. I will be glad to get this back to them and hope they can keep it clean from now on. Once again thanks for all your help!!
