My computer won’t wake up, the monitor goes black but the power is still on. As supposed, if computer goes into sleep mode, by touching the mouse or using the keyboard would wake it up but now it won’t. Even after restart the computer, it continues to give me a black screen. Sometime computer loaded normally but it will shutdown again after 1 to 3 hrs and back to the black screen. Also, it restarts by itself sometime, and then goes into black screen after few rebooting.

I have check RAM, flash the BIOS, Scan the virus. (Cannot access the BIOS/CMOS menu, not sure why). The hard drives/window is not defective since I just reinstalled window 2 weeks ago.

I’ve uncheck Automatically Restart

Check the Event Viewer – seen a few red X (on W2Time, DCOM…) nothing serious that make PC restart.

Is there any way I can fix this?

plsease give me a thoroughly instructions, I may have miss something or doing it wrong.

Regards to your request. We need some more help and information from you:

Can you please give us some more details about this computer (f.e. manufacturer, model or series, graphics adapter)?
How about the latest updates/hotfixes of your operating system?
Have you tried to start the computer in Save Mode and does it show the same behaviour like booting it usually?

Have a great day

Hello TheSentinel

Thank you for your reply

This is an old Compaq presio 5000 (UWAVE Motherboard Socket 462 AMD) I have it for 5/6/7yrs+ maybe i forgot

PC info;
AMD athlon processor 1.2 ghz
1 gb ram
video card ; nvidia geforce 6200 (replace after the old one fried)

It was on window xp pro sp1 when it happen, I though it caught virus or something which i thoroughly scan but there were nothing. so I reinstall xp sp2 and the problem still there.

In addition to the information i gave above, after it turn to black screen it take a while in order to rebooting normally ( it like the pc have overheat problem and need to cool down). 1 more thing, show me how to get in bios/cmos configuration. I have no ideas how to get in on this pc ( which is so easy on other)

*I haven't wait long enough for PC to shut down in safe mode since I can't do anything in safe mode

This PC is mainly use for download/watching, convert/recording movies - no game

this is the whole history of this computer, not that you want to know Hahahahaha

Heya new

I have had some checks about your Compaq notebook. You won't get into the BIOS so easily. Pressing F10 during the boot process will lead you into the BIOS if..... there's still a diagnostics partition. Thats how I could access the BIOS of an old Compaq notebook at home.
For more details check over at the Hewlett-Packard Homepage and look for Compaq support or have a Google search...

I don't think it's an overheating problem, cause the CPU would shut down after a while (5 to 10 minutes) and not immediately like you told us. Have you tried to start the notebook with a removed battery pack only powering with the AC power supply? How's the notebook behaving? Same result or something different?
Tell us please..
