Windows Update Problem

Windows Update won't work
My Windows Update program in 98 SE doesn't work anymore. The folder is there in the Programs folder, but in my Start menu, clicking on the Windows Update icon does nothing. Any ideas how to get it to work again?

Maybe you need to run the iuctl.cab fix. (The second link provided.)
Also you might want to put the Windows Update site into IE's Trusted Sites (IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab). Windows Update needs ActiveX controls to run. Your settings for ActiveX in Security\Custom Level for Internet Zone may be at Disable.

TroubleShooting Windows Update Problems for Any OS

Can you get to this site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

If so, look around there. Maybe, you'll see something that applies to your problem.

If not, you need to install / reinstall the Windows Update controls.
Download the controls from http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.c.../ansi/iuctl.cab and
save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Extract to."
3. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
4. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."
