I have a wierd problem.... I get no system sounds, like windows startup, shutdown, etc. The case speaker just beeps. Yet when something with sound plays, the sound is fine! Music, CD,s etc. Play fine. now, when I go to sounds in control panel and 'test' the sound it plays! I know how to assign sounds, play them, etc. but this one is a puzzler. :boh: (Windows XP Pro)
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I think this is a very interesting article for you. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm scroll down till you see the sentence were did my sounds go and click on the book icon on the left of it. You are missing system alert sounds, startup and shutdown sounds? Here is some of the article:

QUOTE
System Sounds are missing:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

System and Application Sounds are distorted after running a game:

Boot into safe mode, shut down. Then boot normally.

How to Boot into Safe Mode:

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black screen.

Or...

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok, reboot.

I have had this same problem for a couple of days after a fresh repair of windows xp pro.

All my media player sounds were working fine and my computer recognized my audio cards and drivers.

I came across this forum where a guy had the same problem as me.

When looking through my C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder, I noticed that i was missing the same file as him. The file was called "msacm32.drv". I just went to my roommates computer and copied this driver and pasted it in the folder and instantly my system sound was working again.

Thanks for sharing the great info DU7S ciao.gif

I have another no sound fix that might help some.

Last week a tech replaced a motherboard in my firends PC and all worked fine..except no sound and the tech did replace the new sound drivers required for that board.

What I found is that the sound was turned off in the BIOS for that Board and changing that corrected the problem.

Besides no sound the other indication to me that the audio on the board was not available was..

If you go into control panel>sounds and audio devices and open up you would find the volume, audio, and voice tabs are all greyed out.

Reset the default BIOS settings:

You can try resetting the sound default in the BIOS. Here's how:

Note: For most PC's entering the BIOS will be the same. If the instructions below do not work for your system, consult your operating manual for instructions on entering the BIOS.
Turn the PC on. When the Windows logo first appears, press the F1 key repeatedly until you see the BIOS setup screen appear.
Press the F5 key.
Select Yes or OK, then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
Press the F10 key, then select Yes or OK to save the default settings. Press Enter.
Exit the BIOS and restart your system checking for sound.
