hi, i upgraded my computer from
windows ME to windows 2000 today.
when i logged back on, i had to reinstall
many things but most importantly, my
music files were intact. well, now there
is absolutely no sound on my computer.
when i go to volume control under accessories,
i get a popup alert that says there is no mixer device.
i have installed directX but it does not seem to
be the solution. i need to listen to my music! help please.

Reference thread
http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/index...pic=31381&st=15You have to find those sound drivers to upload and install from the manufacture of that PC or tell us what sound card you do have installed.
You might also find that your sound card is not even supported with drivers for that Win2000 upgrade.
But without speicfic info from you on the model of your PC or sound card info..all we can do is offer you general advice.
This might help in the mean time...to check all the obvious things.

Nope. You have a modem/sound combo card. Here are your specs.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...&dlc=en&lang=en They say:
AMC97 codec
Are you going to follow up on your other problem? Did you do anything I advised after you upgraded to win2k?
Sound can wait. Spyware marches on. I am also guessing that problem may just be that you have the messenger service turned on. But that's for the other thread.
I shoiuld have advised you not to upgrade until your ME system problems were resolved so we could see what was going on.
HP's are notorius for not allowing OS upgrades. Their drivers are not update-able often. I know. I have an HP. I searched endlessly and never found what I needed. Good luck. It can be frustrating.

You could download Everest Home Edition:
http://www.lavalys.hu/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=enInstall and run this tool.
It will scan your system and identify all hardware (and much more) and even point you to the driver update websites (usually manufacturer's).
Most likely these are the drivers.. works for win 98..not sure on 2000
http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/75/75404.htmalso read this info..here you will find some drivers that might work for your Rockwell Chameleon combo card with it's AMC97 codec on win2000http://www.allensmith.net/HP/Riptide.htm

Most likely this one will work for you..HP.com: Win2K Audio Modem Combo Driver 1.28MB
f tp://ftp.hp.com/pub/personal_computing/s...omodemcombo.exe

There is most probably instructions on their site. Can you paste the link to the page you downloaded it from? (Not the direct download link that you used to get the file)

I have HP pavillion desktop 8766c . Acc to HP website, it has Riptide Audio/Conexant Modem Combo Card.
I downloaded the driver from link
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/personal_computing/s...omodemcombo.exeafter reading this post. However when I clicked on that executable, it gaae me some .sys files, .dll etc.
Would simply copying them to system32 directory will cause the driver to be activated? That doesn't sound good to me.
What do I need to do with that executable and those .sys files?
I didnt have any specific problem with sound card. I reinstalled windows 2000 on my machine and can't figure out from where I installed the sound card driver last time.

I do not use Win2k so I cannot really provide detailed instructions. I skipped from 98 to XP.
Okay. I ran the executable. It even tells you to refer to the readme on their download page, so that would be a start. Second, it unzips those files to C:\Win2k Drivers\Pavilion\Audio Modem Combo by default. Then what you do is go to the device manager. Select Riptide Audio/Conexant Modem Combo Card, which I am guessing has a yellow excalmation mark next to it. Right Click on it >> update driver >> Install from a list or specific location >> then tick 'include this location in the search' and paste C:\Win2k Drivers\Pavilion\Audio Modem Combo (the directory you unzipped the files to) into that box below. It should then find the drivers and follow the promopts to install the device. These are probably not the exact instructions but Win2k and XP should be pretty similar, in those respects. If you need anymore help do not hesitate to ask.

Take that EXE you downloaded..put it on a cd..pretend then that is the restoration CD..and then use this link to understand what to do next just like Nebon described..but of course you have win2000..but all the
screen shot will be about the same.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/generic...ocname=bph07142and when you look at thar link..start reading about where it says
Finding the driver name for your hardwareand also look at Figure 8
when you find that area on your PC..then you can also click on them and get into the area where you can replace or install drivers..and then you point to that CD and the drivers you have on it..and those are the ones you want to install.
Now my question still is Why are you doing any of this ??
Have you lost the sound or have no sound ??
And BTW if your problem is just distorted sound on that model then there is even another fix for that.
