Full Version: SSK and Look2Me crap
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
murphy_girl
Hi,
I have used the information posted on this web site for a while now.
I have always found it extremely useful, and have successfully cleaned
up a number of systems. However, I have a friends computer that is making
me nuts.

I have scanned the machine with Ad-Aware, EWIDO, Panda, and Hijackthis again
and again. I have also run CWShredder and Ad-Aware VX2 cleaner plug-in.

I still have a set of SurfSideKick and Look2Me files and/or processes
that I cannot remove.

The rundll32,(random_name) process that kicks this stuff off is running even when I
boot in safe mode.

I monitor my tcp connections, and my registry and the connections are initiated by winlogon/wintask.

I have edited the registry, and as soon as I remove the notify entry for SSK it reappears.

The files are repairs302972943.dll, lsnkinfo.dll and the SurfSideKick files.

I have tried to remove them at reboot with Hijackthis and with killbox but they
are still here.

I also have a couple of hidden files in my system32 directory that I don't
torecognize. They are w?aclt.exe and ?hkntfs.exe

Here is my Hijackthis log. Please help!

Welcome to GSF, murphy_girl.

Please download RegLite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

Reboot into Safe Mode
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Open Reglite and Copy and Paste the bold text below into the Address Bar and hit Enter

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

In the smaller left hand pane> Right Click the Windows folder (Highlighted in Blue)

Select Rename> Rename it to Windoz> Hit Enter

Now look in the larger right hand pane> locate and double click AppInit_DLLs

Under Value > Remove (Delete)> repairs302972943.dll

Open the Search Assistant (Click Start>>Click Search)
Select All Files and Folders
Select Advanced Options
Make sure there is a check by every box under Advanced options

Now under All Files and Folders, enter this into the text box:

repairs302972943.dll

Delete any exact matches

Restart and Open Reglite again> go back to the folder you renamed to Windoz and Rename it again, back to Windows.

Have HijackThis fix this entry if its still there:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972943.dll

Post a fresh HijackThis log, let us know if you found that file and were able to delete it.
murphy_girl
Hi Stonangel and thank you for the welcome.

I used reglite as instructed, followed by the search.

When I tried to delete the file I got a message that it was in use. So, I ran regsvr32 /u repairs302972943.dll in an attempt to unregister it and got the following message:

repairs302972943.dll was loaded, but the DLLUnregisterserver entry point was not found.

Hijackthis didn't have an AppInit_Dll entry in it though.

Hi murphy_girl,

Please Go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs and Remove if found:

SurfSideKick 3

Close Internet Explorer and any open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe

Boot in Safe mode and delete the following folder highlighted in bold if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

Restart in nomal mode and download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click L2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added L2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the L2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi Stonangel,

Thanks for the on-going help. I feel like such a pain-in-the-ass dumping these logs on you.

The notify entries always reappear with a different name, kinda like the rundll32 dll name.

Anyway, here is the output from l2mfix:

L2MFIX find log 1.04a

Hi murphy_girl,

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log, please.
murphy_girl
OK Stonangel,

Here is the L2MFIX log, followed by the Hijackthis log.

The good news is that when I run Autoruns from sysinternals, I no longer see that lsnkinfo.dll in the WINLOGON-notify setion and rundll32 is not listed as a running process (hallelujah!).

But, as you can see the SurfSideKick crap is still in the currentversion-run section.

(However, since posting this I asked Hijackthis to fix the SurfSideKick entries - and ran a new scan. The SSK crap was gone. So at the tail end of this message is an updated Hijackthis log!)

Hi murphy_girl,

Good job flowerz.gif Your Hijackthis log looks clean.

Please download and launch this uninstaller

Restart your computer an run this online scan

Post back the report and let us see what's coming with, please.
murphy_girl
Stonangel,

Thank you so much for all of your help.

I won't be able to run a new scan for you. As soon as I had a clean Hijackthis log I installed a McAfee firewall and anti-virus program (his norton expired), and dropped the computer off. My friend wasn't home, so I left that sucker on the porch and beat-feet! I was so sick of the freaking thing.

However, I did copy all of the tools and logs onto a thumb drive for my own review. Now I'm hoping you wouldn't mind answering questions as I attempt to understand exactly what the different tools did?

When I sent you the output from the LM2fix #1 run - what exactly were you looking at (for) before you asked me to run #2?

Thats my only question so far, but I'm sure I'll have more as I review the logs.

Thanks again,

murphy-girl

Hi murphy_girl,

Am sorry but it's difficult to explain, it's a long way, I didn't find any tutorial OMG.gif and my English isn't as good as it was, see my location, please uhm.gif . You had a Look2Me infection on the computer shown by this entry in your HijackThis log:

QUOTE
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WindowsUpdate - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsnkinfo.dll

So I asked you to use this fix.

However there are two left over in the System32:

09/29/2005 06:29 AM 401,408 w?aclt.exe

08/29/2005 06:40 AM 401,408 ?hkntfs.exe

It's PurityScan...
