Winter 2005: DOSLynx text web browser updated to version .30b, which brings a broader range of compatibility with HTML standards, also a Protected Mode version is now available. OpenGEM 5 GUI released, older software thoroughly updated for the 21st Century. Autumn 2005: Arachne Web Browser updated to version 1.89.

Summer 2005: HiTech Labs has renamed WinDOS GUI to Spectra. FreeGEM version 4 released, a 386 PC is the minimum requirement, both mini and full distributions available. Mpxplay audio player v1.52 released.

Spring 2005:
DOS Solutions have updated the EZNOS 386 Web Server Software. DataLight's Single User Version ROM-DOS is available FREE after registration, unfortunately requires a Windows PC to create the disk images.

I have to admit that, until sometime in 1999, I thought one needed a Windows or Unix or Linux system to connect with the Internet.

I knew that most of the early Internet software was first written for Unix. What I didn't realize at the time was that much of this software got "ported" to or rewritten for DOS. I now understand that Winsock was developed only after this had been going on for a few years. Of course, once Winsock(s) started working well, much of that porting from Unix was redirected from DOS to Windows.
