I have repetittive occurences of virus and spywares. I have AVG and it finds both Dropper Small 5 J and Polall1r. It heals wupdt.exe and removes polall1r.exe - but they come back within a day or so. Also have popups. I downloaded and ran spybote and HijackThis.

here is my log

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

A little cleanup, some protection, and you will be done! I am sure you have heard it before, but you really do need to consider upgrading your operating system. For just a little more than the cost of Windows XP you can buy a new computer (without monitor) That should get you Windows XP Home, at least and a machine good for another few years.

First:
Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08227B4B-54FE-4C4D-809F-BCA46292FC5B} - (no file)
AC
O9 - Extra button: Your PC is infected with Spyware - click here to fix your PC - {FB74C951-ACA1-4e33-A94C-A9261EB2CCB7} - https://www.spydeleter.com/order2.php?KBID=1062 (file missing)

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Second:
At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
d. Bugoff: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/bugoff.zip

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/]http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware,htm

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www/spywarewarrior.com/reogue_anti-spyware.htm

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

Hi
Thanks for the help - I did the final step and one pesky line does not go away.
It is
O9 - Extra button: Your PC is infected with Spyware - click here to fix your PC - {FB74C951-ACA1-4e33-A94C-A9261EB2CCB7} - https://www.spydeleter.com/order2.php?KBID=1062 (file missing)
I tried both in safe and regular mode and closed all windows - but it just keeps comng back.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Linda
LoPhatPhuud
Right click on any blank space in the IE toolbars and make sure that the Toolbars are not locked. If they were, try removing that O9 entry after unlocking them

Let me know what's happening. I need to do some checking to find out if there is anything else
lschaner
Hi
I am not sure if I am doing this correctly - when I right click on the toolbar I don't see an option of lock or unlock. When I select "customize" I see a list of the tools available and this one shows up with no icon to represent it. I removed it from the current toolbar to the "available" section and tried to remove it - but no use. Thanks
Linda
LoPhatPhuud
Good Work!! The actual Menu Item is 'Lock the Toolbarsd' and it is a toggle. It should be right above 'Customize'.

I want you run a program for me so I can see where in the registry that button is.

Download the following file:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/pv.zip

Unzip it to your Desktop (It has its own folder)

Double Click on the PV folder

Double Click on runme.bat

Select Option 8 (Registry Menu)

Select Option 6 (IE Extensions key)

Copy the Notepad window that opens and post it contents in this thread.
lschaner
Hi
Here is the notepad info:

I don't have that toggle in my IE toolbar - I am on Win95 - is that the reason? Also - on the runme.bat - my options were 4 (registry menu) and 5 (IE extension key) - thought I'd let you know in case that means something.
Again, thank you so much - you are my computer angel
Linda
LoPhatPhuud
Thanks for bearing with me. Win 95a is an old OS and I forget just what options are available for IE 5.5.

The last step gave me the info to remove the button completely. Here is what to do next:

Please download and install Registrar Lite (freeware) from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Be sure it is installed to its own folder.
Close all open windows.
Run Registrar Lite.

Copy and Paste the following text into the Address Bar of Registrar Lite:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{FB74C951-ACA1-4e33-A94C-A9261EB2CCB7}

In the left-hand pane Right Click on the purple folder (the folder name should be {FB74C951-ACA1-4e33-A94C-A9261EB2CCB7})

Select 'Delete' from the context menu that opens.

Confirm the deletion and exit Registrar Lite.

Run HiJackThis again and post a log in this thread for final review.

Reboot.

Check the Toolbar -> Customize option in IE to verify that the button has been removed.
