Hello. My AVG keeps alerting me to a trojan on my system. (SecThough.B ) I run AVG and it turns up nothing. I ran Spybot S&D and Ad Aware 6, still getting the message. So I did a Google search for information on how to remove this trojan and I came across this site and decided to post in hopes of getting some help. I read through another post about SecThought.B and I figured it would be best if I made my own thread because my HijackThis log would be different.

Hi a_rod and welcome to the forum

First, please give us the name and exact location (full path) of the infection AVG is reporting.

Next, please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use C:\Program Files\HijackThis but feel free to use any name or folder you like. Unzip HijackThis again and save the contents (Hijackthis.exe) to the new folder you made. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from there. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

Then, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

It is generally recommended that you uninstall the P2P Networking:
You can uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs. If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Then remove the P2P Networking folder in C:\Windows\System32, if still there.

Ok, I ran through HijackThis again after I unizpped it to a new folder on C: and fixed the files you specified except for SMSS.exe. I then checked the SMSS.exe on the site you provided and here are the results:

So I guess that means its ok. I also removed P2P as suggested. Also my AVG displayed the trojan warning when I came home, but I closed it out and forgot to copy down the sorce. Is there any way I can find the file in AVG? One more thing, a few days ago when this all started (when my AVG told me about the trojan) I ran AVG test and it said to have healed the infectious files and I still have the log file from that test, if you are interested.

Ok, the SMSS.exe I want you to scan is directly in the Windows folder. Make sure when you hit *browse* that you are going to the C:\Windows folder and locating the file SMSS.exe (and not the one in the System32 folder which is legit)

Humor me, please and run through this once more. If it is not a trojan or virus - it might be spyware or adware....but I want to rule out the former first.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Debug ] C:\WINDOWS\SMSS.exe <---this may well be a trojan. The real SMSS would be in your system32 folder not in the Windows folder. Please go to the following site and do an online single file check. Copy the report at the end and post the results back here please:

Ok, I have the AVG message and I attached it to this post. I also ran that online test again of SSMS.exe, results:

Hi a_rod,

Thanks. I've sent you a PM with my email address to send that smss.exe file to for analysis (the one in the Windows folder).

This is your valid smss.exe running where it is supposed to be (in the System32 folder)
Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe <---valid file

This one is NOT valid (it should not be in your startups). Checkmark it with HijackThis and hit *fix checked*. Then reboot your PC. This will only stop it from running (it won't delete the file, but I need to look at it first to see what it is)

Secondly, to solve the AVG problem:

The AVG (drive me nuts that message) detection. The trojan is gone but the infected file it found is in your System Restore folder (which AVG cannot touch as it is protected by windows). All you need to do is reset your System restore to stop that warning.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
