Any advice/assistance would be appreciated. :)

Hi carl and welcome to the forum flowerz.gif

First, you have an old outdated version of HijackThis and it is not in a good location. You need to delete that one and get the latest version l.97.7. Download *Hijack This!*

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe

or here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?...a8baee6434cfc13

Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed. Download and save the contents to the new folder you made and then navigate to the HijackThis.exe to run it. Make sure you are offline with all browsers closed and nothing else open but HijackThis.exe. Then, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked* (see my notes on items that are optional but recommended to fix)

Reboot your PC.

As for the trojan AVG is detecting - it is most likely in your Temporary Internet Files folder. Please empty the contents of that folder (clear out your cache) to resolve that problem.

One of your old start page entries lead to a Coolwebsearch hijacker domain. Just to be sure you don't have remnants of that parasite, please download and run this free tool called CWShredder (specially made to remove Coolwebsearch and it's many variants)

Download it here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

or

Here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?...6c5901960cc6e24

Just download it, and click on it (You will need to have all browsers and any open windows closed). Hit the *Fix* button to run it. Let it fix what it finds. When done, press *next* and you will get the results, and then *exit*

Now, please rescan with HijackThis after doing all that and post a new log to be sure we got everything :)
carl

That log looks clean, Carl :thumb:

Did you also clear out the TIF folder so AVG quit alerting you about the trojan dialer?

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

carl
Have rebooted my PC after turning off system restore and re-run AVG. The virus is still showing as being stored in C:\WINDOWS\Download Program Files. The cache has also been cleared.

Any further advice?

Hi carl,

Check your Private Messages link at the top of this forum. I've sent you a message to send me a copy of the file AVG is detecting so I can have it analyzed.

Is there a file name it is giving you?

These are your Downloaded Program files from the log:

O16 - DPF: {02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B} (QuickTime Object) - http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab

O16 - DPF: {166B1BCA-3F9C-11CF-8075-444553540000} (Shockwave ActiveX Control) - http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwa...ector/swdir.cab

O16 - DPF: {3E68E405-C6DE-49FF-83AE-41EE9F4C36CE} (Office Update Installation Engine) - http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/content/opuc.cab

O16 - DPF: {597C45C2-2D39-11D5-8D53-0050048383FE} (OPUCatalog Class) - http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates/content/opuc.cab

--->This one is suspicious as that website shows up in my IESPYAD restricted zone list (I would like a copy of this file please) O16 - DPF: {A7EA8AD2-287F-11D3-B120-006008C39542} (CBSTIEPrint Class) - http://offers.brightstreet.com/cif/download/bin/actxcab.cab

Do you know what this file is?--->O16 - DPF: {AE9DCB17-F804-11D2-A44A-0020182C1446} (IntraLaunch.MainControl) - file://D:\Resources\IntraLaunch.CAB

O16 - DPF: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} (Shockwave Flash Object) - http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shock...ash/swflash.cab

O16 - DPF: {DF6A0F17-0B1E-11D4-829D-00C04F6843FE} (Microsoft Office Tools on the Web Control) - http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/Template...nloads/outc.cab

Except for the one I have listed in bold, they all look OK (not sure what the IntraLaunch thing is. If you don't know either, send a copy of that one too please)

AVG should give you the option to delete the file. If so try that.

Also get a second opinion from a free online AV scanner. Here are several recommended ones to use:
